Chapter 17: Billie

That night, I lay in my sleeping bag beside Muriel's bed, enveloped in the warmth of our makeshift camp within Gavin's apartment. A sense of peace had settled over me, a rare tranquility that I hadn't experienced in a long time. I couldn't help but attribute this newfound calm to the laughter that Gavin and I had shared after our playful water fight. Watching TV on the couch together, we had spent the evening in amicable companionship. His transformation from the brooding figure I had known previously was astonishing. Without Catrina's presence, he was more genuine, more real, and it had a profound impact on me.

The morning light stirred me from my slumber, and to my surprise, Gavin was absent from the apartment. Instead, Aislin and Gretel were busy in the kitchen, preparing breakfast. Aislin's infectious grin greeted me, and she handed me a plate loaded with scrambled eggs and succulent deer meat. "Eat up! We're going for a run today."

"As wolves?" I inquired, a mix of excitement and trepidation coursing through me.

Aislin replied with a cheeky grin, "Yes, ma'am. How's your leg?"

"It's okay," I replied. My leg had substantially improved after a day of rest and recovery. Yet, lingering doubts and self-consciousness about my ability to keep pace with the seasoned wolves remained. “Are you sure I’m allowed…?”

Aislin chuckled. "You're a grown ass woman, Billie Jesper. You're allowed to go for a run."

The simplicity of her statement was a revelation to me. It was a stark reminder that my prolonged isolation had been anything but natural. My desire for freedom and the sense of belonging to a pack was only human, or in my case, wolf.

Together, we walked through the main street of Grandbay, past the grocery store and the rural houses, and ventured into the forest nestled in the foothills. Aislin, experienced and agile, began to disrobe, stowing her clothes in a backpack she had brought along. She gestured for me to do the same. Though this was the norm for werewolves, the act was still strangely unfamiliar to me. Furthermore, I couldn't help but feel self-conscious about how much longer it took me to transform compared to Aislin. Nevertheless, she waited patiently, her reassuring presence encouraging me.

Once we had both assumed our wolf forms, Aislin was a striking sight with her fiery copper and orange fur, while I bore the hues of a warm autumn day in pale browns and golds. Her encouraging nudge directed me forward, and she tugged at the fur on my flank, urging me to run alongside her.

Running with another wolf was an entirely new experience for me. Together, we soared through the forest, our movements swift and graceful as we gracefully maneuvered past stray branches, leaped over rocks, and splashed through a meandering creek. In the exhilarating freedom of our run, I temporarily forgot the burdens of my past. Warmth and joy surged through my veins, and though my healing leg grew sore, I relished every moment of our journey. Aislin playfully raced me and won, her playful taunts filling the air as we caught our breath.
